Renal cell carcinoma treated with microwave ablation

Clinical Case

71 years old male polymorbid patient with CT findings of small renal cell carcinoma (13,5x15mm) (picture 1). After multidisciplinary consensus (urologist, anesthesiologist, interventional radiologist) patient was indicated for ablation treatment.  Biopsy was not performed due to clear CT image evidence of tumor.

Procedure

Local CT guided microwave ablation treatment was performed under local anesthesia with patient lying in supine position.

To ensure achievement of complete ablation with good safety margins, Ablation was made with a single 14 gauge 20 centimeters  microwave  antenna (Tato 2, Biomedical Srl) applying 35 W of energy  for 10 minutes (picture 2).

Follow up/ Conclusion

Follow-up imaging (3 months) - dual-phase CT imaging of the abdomen showed no evidence of abnormal contrast enhancement, ablation zone surrounded by fibrous tissue, confirming a complete ablation  and no complications.
