Recurrence of renal cell carcinoma treated with microwave ablation

Clinical Case

63 years old male patient who underwent partial nephrectomy due to RCC of right kidney, on follow-up CT with findings of recurrence renal cell carcinoma (32x30mm) with endophytic growth (picture 1). After multidisciplinary consensus (urologist, anesthesiologist, interventional radiologist) patient was indicated for ablation treatment.

Procedure

Combined local CT/US guided microwave ablation treatment was performed under local anesthesia and analgosedation with patient lying in supine position.

To ensure achievement of complete ablation with good safety margins, ablation was made with two 14 gauge 20 centimeters  microwave antennas placed parallel (Tato 2, Biomedical Srl), simultaneously  applying 35 W of energy for 15 minutes (picture 2).

Follow up/Conclusion

Follow-up imaging (2 months) - dual-phase CT imaging of the abdomen showed  no evidence of abnormal contrast enhancement, ablation zone surrounded by fibrous tissue, confirming a complete ablation and no complications, with no significant renal function drop.
